Precuts Explained: Charm Packs, Jelly Rolls, and Layer Cakes

The first precut I ever bought was a charm pack, and I bought it for the honest reason most people do: it was a tidy little stack of forty coordinated fabrics for the price of one lunch, and cutting it myself would have meant buying forty bolts. Precuts are genuinely useful. They're also a product with real markup and real design constraints, and shops are much better at advertising the first part than the second. Here's what the names actually mean, what you're really paying, and when the convenience is worth it.

What the standard cuts actually are

The names sound like a bakery, but the sizes underneath are standardized enough to plan around. A charm pack is a stack of 5-inch squares, usually around 42 of them, one or two of each print in a fabric collection. A jelly roll is the same idea in strips: roughly 40 strips, each 2.5 inches wide and cut the full width of the fabric, about 42 to 44 inches selvage to selvage. A layer cake is 10-inch squares, again typically 42 per pack. And then there are the two shop cuts that aren't packs at all: a fat quarter, which is a quarter yard cut wide — 18 by about 22 inches instead of the skinny 9-by-44 strip a normal quarter-yard cut gives you — and a fat eighth, the same trick at 9 by about 22 inches.

One naming caveat worth knowing before you shop: "Jelly Roll" and "Layer Cake" are Moda's trademarked names, so other manufacturers sell the identical thing as "strip rolls," "2.5-inch strip sets," "10-inch stackers," and so on. The sizes are what matter, not the bakery branding.

Pinked edges and where your quarter inch starts

Most factory precuts arrive with pinked edges — a zigzag cut instead of a straight one, which keeps the raw edges from shredding while the stack is handled, shipped, and pawed over at the shop. The zigzag creates a real question at the sewing machine: is a charm square 5 inches measured from the outer points of the zigzag, or from the valleys? The answer, for the major manufacturers, is tip to tip. The stated size includes the pinking, so the outer points are the edge, and your quarter-inch seam allowance gets measured from those outer tips.

What matters even more than which convention you use is that you use one consistently. If you feed some squares through with the tips at the guide and some with the valleys, you've introduced up to a sixteenth of an inch of drift per seam, and that's exactly the compounding error that makes rows refuse to line up later. Pick the tips, line them up against your quarter-inch guide every time, and the pinking stops being a problem.

The cost-per-yard math nobody does at the register

Precuts are priced per pack, which conveniently hides what you're paying per yard of actual fabric. The math takes thirty seconds and is worth doing once so you know the shape of the deal. A yard of quilting cotton at 42 usable inches wide is 36 by 42 inches, or about 1,512 square inches. A charm pack of 42 squares at 5 inches each is 42 times 25, or 1,050 square inches — about seven tenths of a yard. If the pack costs $12, you're paying the equivalent of roughly $17 a yard for fabric that sells on the bolt for $12 to $14.

Jelly rolls and layer cakes both work out to about 4,200 square inches — a little under 2.8 yards. A $45 roll is therefore about $16 a yard. Every precut format carries a premium of a few dollars a yard, and that's fair enough: someone did the cutting, and you got the entire collection instead of a quarter yard of one print. The point of the math isn't that precuts are a ripoff. It's that you should know you're paying a cutting-and-variety fee, so you can decide when that fee is buying you something real.

When precuts genuinely save time

The honest case for precuts is strong in three situations. First, variety you couldn't otherwise afford: a charm pack gives you forty different prints for the cost of a third of a yard, and no shop will cut you forty five-inch squares off forty bolts. For a scrappy-looking quilt in one designer's palette, nothing else comes close. Second, strip-pieced patterns: jelly roll quilts, log cabins, rail fences — anything built from 2.5-inch strips — skip the single most tedious cutting session in quilting, because slicing forty accurate strips from yardage takes a full evening and the roll did it for you. Third, momentum. If the gap between "I want to make a quilt" and the first seam is one whole day of cutting, plenty of quilts die in that gap. A precut lets you sew tonight, and that's worth a few dollars a yard to a lot of people, me included some weeks.

When precuts box in the design

The constraint side is just as real. A precut only makes the shapes its size allows: from a 5-inch charm you can get a 4.5-inch finished square, four 2.5-inch squares, or two half-square triangles of a specific size, and that's roughly the whole menu. There's no fussy-cutting a motif that sits in the wrong spot, no cutting a 6.5-inch setting square, and no borders, sashing, backing, or binding in the pack — you'll be buying coordinating yardage for those regardless, which is a line item people forget when comparing costs. Packs also include the whole collection, meaning you get the two prints you'd never have chosen, usually in duplicate. And directional prints in a jelly roll run whichever way the strip ran, whether that suits your block or not. If your design needs specific shapes, specific motifs, or more than token amounts of any single fabric, yardage is the better buy even after the cutting time.

Quilter's Note If a precut collection wins you over, buy the background and binding yardage from that collection at the same time, not later. Fabric collections have one print run and sell out — the pack will still be on the shelf next season, but the coordinating background yardage very often won't be.

Don't pre-wash precuts

Whatever your position in the pre-washing debate for yardage, precuts sit outside it: don't wash them. A 5-inch square or a 2.5-inch strip has a huge amount of cut edge relative to its size, and a trip through the washer frays those edges, tangles the pieces into a knotted mass, and — worse for your piecing — shrinks and distorts pieces whose entire value is their exact size. The pinked edge slows fraying during handling; it doesn't survive agitation. A charm square that comes out of the wash at 4.8 inches and slightly rhomboid is scrap. If dye bleeding worries you because the collection mixes saturated darks with light prints, handle it at the other end: quilt the top as-is and throw two color-catcher sheets into the finished quilt's first wash instead.

Troubleshooting: your "identical" precut pieces don't measure identical

Sooner or later you'll hit a pack where units sewn from different pieces come out slightly different sizes, and it's worth diagnosing before blaming your seam allowance. Measure a sample of the pack first — pull five or six pieces and check them tip to tip. Factory cutting is done through tall stacks of fabric, and pieces from the middle of a stack can run a needle's width smaller or larger than the stated size; strips sometimes carry a gentle bow from the bolt's fold, visible if you lay one against a ruler's edge. If the pieces themselves vary, cut to the smallest common size where the pattern allows, or plan to square up the sewn units rather than fighting each seam. If the pieces measure true and the sewn units still vary, the culprit is the usual one — an inconsistent quarter inch — and the fix lives at your machine, not in the pack. Either way, five minutes of measuring before the first seam beats discovering the drift at row assembly.
