The first quilt I sashed came out of the sewing room a full inch narrower at the bottom than at the top. Every block was square, every block measured the same, and the top was still crooked, because I had cut long sashing strips crosswise, sewn them on without measuring anything, and let the machine ease in whatever slack it found. Sashing looks like the easy part of a quilt top. It's actually the part that decides whether the whole thing hangs straight, and it runs on a small amount of arithmetic that nobody tells beginners about.
What sashing is doing for the quilt
Sashing is the strip of fabric that runs between blocks, framing each one instead of letting them touch. It does three jobs at once. It gives busy blocks visual breathing room, so a scrappy star doesn't bleed into the star next to it. It makes a quilt bigger without piecing more blocks, which matters when twelve blocks was all the energy you had. And, quietly, it forgives: when your blocks vary by an eighth of an inch here and there, a sashing strip absorbs that difference in a way a block-to-block setting never can, because no two block seams have to meet across the join.
That last point is the one I'd sell hardest to a newer quilter. In a straight block-to-block setting, every seam intersection in one block has to align with its neighbor's, and any drift shows up as a broken line across the quilt. Put a two-inch strip between them and there is no line to break.
The 1830s habit that stuck
The block-and-sashing quilt we treat as the default layout is a specific American invention with a traceable start. The International Quilt Museum's Block by Block exhibition dates the rise of pieced-block quilts to the 1820s and 1830s, and notes that quiltmakers adopted sashing — strips of fabric delineating blocks — in the 1830s, a practice that was originally unique to American makers. The museum's own example is a Garden Maze from about 1820 to 1840, probably made in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where diagonal sashing creates an illusion of a lattice sitting on top of a mosaic background. I like knowing that. What feels like the plain, unremarkable way to set a quilt was somebody's design idea, and it caught on because it solved exactly the problems it still solves.
Choosing a width that suits the block
There's no rule here, but there is a workable range. Sashing that finishes somewhere between a sixth and a quarter of the block's finished size almost always looks intentional. For a twelve-inch block, that puts you between two and three inches finished. Narrower than that and the sashing reads as an accident, a seam that got fat. Much wider and the blocks start to look like framed pictures hung on a wall of sashing fabric, which is a real look but you should choose it on purpose.
Whatever number you land on, add a half inch for seam allowances to get your cut width. Two-inch finished sashing is cut at two and a half inches.
Cornerstones, and what they fix
Cornerstones are the small squares set where the vertical and horizontal sashing strips cross. They're optional, and they do two useful things. Visually, they break up what would otherwise be a long uninterrupted stripe of sashing fabric running the width of the quilt. Structurally, they're a matching aid: with cornerstones, each long horizontal strip is pieced from segments whose lengths you control exactly, so the vertical sashing in row one lines up with the vertical sashing in row two.
Cut cornerstones at the same measurement as your sashing cut width — two-and-a-half-inch sashing takes two-and-a-half-inch squares. You need one for every intersection, which for a quilt three blocks across and four rows down, with sashing around the outside edge, comes to four across by five down, or twenty squares.
Cutting the strips so they don't stretch
Short sashing pieces — the ones that go between blocks inside a row — can be cut crosswise without worrying, because at twelve or so inches long they barely have room to misbehave. The long strips are a different problem. A quilt three twelve-inch blocks wide with two-inch sashing needs horizontal strips that finish forty-four inches, and no crosswise cut gives you that from a forty-two-inch bolt.
You have two honest options. Cut those strips along the lengthwise grain, parallel to the selvage, which gives you any length you need and is the more stable direction besides — lengthwise grain has almost no give, and give is exactly what let my first sashed quilt drift. Or piece crosswise strips end to end with a diagonal seam, the same join you'd use on binding, so the bulk of the seam spreads out instead of stacking.
Building the rows, then joining them
The order matters and it's the same every time. First, sew short sashing between the blocks of a single row: block, sashing, block, sashing, block, adding a strip at each end too if you want sashing around the outside. Press those seams toward the sashing, which is both flatter and helpful later. Repeat for every row.
Second, build the long horizontal strips. With cornerstones, that means sewing cornerstone, sashing, cornerstone, sashing across the width, matching the sashing segment length to the block width so everything registers. Without cornerstones, it's one continuous strip cut to the measured row length. Third, join everything in sequence: sashing row, block row, sashing row, block row, and so on down the quilt.
When you sew a long sashing strip to a block row, pin at the ends first, then at each block seam, then ease whatever is left between pins. Pinning at the intersections is not optional here. That's the point where a viewer's eye checks whether your quilt is straight, and an eighth of an inch of drift at a cornerstone is visible from across a room even though the same eighth in the middle of a strip is invisible.
Pressing so the intersections nest
Press block-row seams toward the sashing and press the long sashing-row seams toward the sashing as well. Done consistently, the seam allowances at each intersection fall in opposite directions and lock against each other when you bring the pieces together — you'll feel them click into place with your fingertips before you pin. If you press everything one direction out of habit, the allowances stack instead of nesting and every intersection gets a lump that pushes the seam off line by a thread or two.
Yardage math without a pattern
For any layout, three counts get you there. Short sashing pieces equal the number of rows times the number of blocks per row plus one, if you're sashing the outer edges. Long strips equal the number of rows plus one. Cornerstones equal the columns plus one times the rows plus one. For twelve twelve-inch blocks set three across and four down with two-inch sashing: sixteen short pieces at two and a half by twelve and a half inches, five long strips finishing forty-four inches, and twenty cornerstones cut at two and a half inches.
A sashing routine, in order
Here's the sequence I follow now, and I haven't had a crooked top since. Square up all blocks to one measurement first and write that number down. Pick a finished sashing width in the sixth-to-quarter range and add a half inch for the cut width. Cut short pieces to the block's unfinished measurement. Sew the block rows, pressing toward the sashing. Measure three of those rows through the middle, and if they disagree, take the average and ease the odd ones to match. Cut or piece the long strips to that single number, lengthwise grain when you can. Build the pieced strips with cornerstones, join everything in order with pins at every intersection, and press toward the sashing throughout. It's ten minutes of measuring in a project that takes weeks, and it's the difference between a quilt that hangs square and one that leans.
