Setting Blocks On Point: Sizing Side and Corner Triangles

The first time I set blocks on point, I did the thing everyone does: I pieced my blocks, turned them forty-five degrees on the design wall, admired how much better they looked, and then had no idea what to cut to fill in the jagged edges. I ended up slicing two spare blocks in half diagonally, which produced triangles that were the wrong size and, worse, put stretchy bias along the entire outside edge of the quilt. The top rippled for the rest of its life. The math that would have prevented all of it takes about ninety seconds.

What actually changes when a block turns forty-five degrees

Rotating a block doesn't change its size, but it changes the dimension that matters for layout. Set square, an eight-inch finished block occupies eight inches of quilt width. Set on point, the same block spans its own diagonal — eight multiplied by 1.414, or about 11¼ inches. That's why a diagonal setting makes a quilt noticeably bigger from the same block count, and why the arithmetic you use for a straight set gives the wrong answer here.

The rotation also leaves two kinds of holes. Along each of the four edges, the space between two adjacent blocks needs a triangle to fill it, and those are the side setting triangles. At each of the four corners, a smaller triangle finishes the point. They are not the same size and they are not cut the same way, and that difference is entirely about fabric grain.

Side triangles: multiply, then cut an X

Side setting triangles need straight grain along their longest edge, because that long edge becomes the raw outside edge of your quilt top and it has to hold its shape until the binding goes on. You get that by cutting a square and slicing it twice, corner to corner both ways, so the four resulting triangles each have an original edge of the square as their hypotenuse.

The formula is the finished block size times 1.414, plus 1¼ inches for seam allowances, rounded up to the nearest eighth. For an eight-inch finished block: 8 × 1.414 is 11.312, plus 1.25 is 12.562, which rounds up to a 12⅝-inch square. Cut it in half twice on both diagonals and you have four side triangles. The extra quarter inch or so beyond the bare seam allowance is deliberate — it gives you a sliver of trimming room at the outer edge so the block points don't end up sitting right on the cut line.

Corner triangles: divide, then cut once

Corner triangles are the opposite in every way. Here the two short legs land on the outside edges, so you want straight grain on the legs and bias on the hypotenuse that gets sewn to the block. A square cut once on the diagonal gives you exactly that.

The formula is the finished block size divided by 1.414, plus ⅞ inch, rounded up to the nearest eighth. For the same eight-inch block: 8 ÷ 1.414 is 5.657, plus 0.875 is 6.532, so cut a 6⅝-inch square. One diagonal cut gives two corner triangles, so two squares cover all four corners of any quilt, no matter how big it is.

Quilter's Note Never cut a spare block in half to make setting triangles, and don't substitute a half-square triangle for a side triangle. Both put bias on the outside edge of the quilt, which stretches while you handle the top, ripples once it's basted, and can't be pressed back into square.

Counting how many of each you need

Count two numbers off your layout: how many blocks sit along the top row, and how many run down the left column. Call them across and down. Because the rotated grid nests a second set of blocks in the gaps between those, the total block count is across times down, plus one fewer across times one fewer down. Two across and three down comes to six plus two, or eight blocks — which surprises people who expected six. Three across and four down comes to twelve plus six, or eighteen.

The triangles are simpler. Each edge has a notch between neighboring blocks, one fewer than the block count along that edge, and every notch takes one side setting triangle: two across minus one, plus two down minus one. For two across and three down that's two plus four, or six side triangles, so two cut squares cover it with two triangles spare. Corner triangles are always four, from two squares. I cut one extra side-triangle square regardless — they're small, and having a spare the day you miscut one saves a trip for more background fabric.

Sizing the finished top before you buy border fabric

Because each block spans its diagonal, the finished dimensions are simply the across and down counts multiplied by that diagonal. Two across and three down, in eight-inch blocks, finishes about 22⅝ by 33⅞ inches before borders. A more useful example: three across and four down with the same block comes to roughly 34 by 45¼ inches, which is a real throw. Work that number out before you shop, because a diagonal set eats more background fabric than quilters expect and the setting triangles all come out of it.

Trimming the edges without amputating your points

Once the rows are joined, the edges will be slightly uneven and will need squaring up. The rule I follow: the cut line sits exactly a quarter inch outside the outermost points of the blocks, so that when the binding seam takes its quarter inch, the points survive with a hair of breathing room. Lay a long ruler along one edge, line the quarter-inch mark up with two block points, and check a third point before you cut — if the three don't agree, your seams have drifted and you want to know that now rather than after the blade has passed.

If precise points at the edge make you nervous, cut the side triangles from a square a half inch larger than the formula gives and let the blocks float. The trimmed edge then falls in open background fabric instead of through block points, at the cost of a slightly wider frame of background around the outside — which on most quilts reads as a design choice rather than a compromise.

A Pennsylvania quilt that shows why the setting persists

Diagonal settings aren't a modern trick. The International Quilt Museum's Square in a Square, made by an unknown maker around 1890 to 1910 and probably in Pennsylvania, is built from stacked squares set on point on a diagonal. In the museum's notes on the quilt, Barbara Brackman describes how the interlocking light and dark forms produce grids that advance and recede as you look, so the eye catches one pattern only to lose it to another. That's the real argument for the setting: rotating simple blocks generates secondary patterns across the seams that a straight set can't produce, and the maker got that effect from stacks of squares and a good collection of small prints.

The order I work in for a diagonal set

I write the numbers down before touching the rotary cutter: finished block size, the diagonal, the side-triangle square, the corner square, and the counts of each. Then I cut all four background pieces at once — side squares, corner squares, and one spare — and keep the two sizes in separate labeled bags, because a 12⅝-inch square and a 6⅝-inch square look interchangeable in a stack at nine at night and are not.

Assembly runs in diagonal rows, not straight ones. Lay the whole quilt out on the floor or a design wall first, add a side triangle to each end of every diagonal row, sew each row, press, then join the rows and add the four corners last. Handle those outside edges as little as possible, starch them lightly if the fabric feels soft, and square up only after every seam is pressed. Then measure the trimmed top and cut borders to that measurement rather than to the number you calculated at the start.
