Storing Fabric and Finished Quilts: Light, Folds, and Pests

The first quilt I ever finished spent four years folded in thirds inside a cedar chest, and when I pulled it out for a photograph the fold lines had gone permanently pale and one of them had started to give way in the batting. Nothing had attacked it. No water got in. It just sat in the dark being folded, which turns out to be enough. Storage is the part of quilting nobody teaches, and it quietly undoes more work than any technique mistake I've made.

What actually damages fabric in a closet

Textile conservators think about this in terms of four agents: light, climate, pests, and physical stress from the way an object is supported. The National Park Service publishes its whole conservation approach for textile collections in the Museum Handbook's appendix on curatorial care of textile objects, and while it's written for people caring for accessioned collections, the reasoning transfers straight to a closet full of fat quarters and finished quilts. Their targets are worth knowing even if you'll never hit them exactly: textiles stored between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, humidity as close to 50 percent as you can manage, and no sharp swings in either.

The swings matter more than the absolute numbers. Cotton is hygroscopic, meaning it takes on and gives up moisture as the air around it changes, and every cycle of that makes the fibers swell and contract slightly. Do it thousands of times over a decade and you get mechanical stress on the yarns for free, without anyone touching the quilt. That's the actual argument against the garage, the attic, and the basement — not that they're dirty, but that they're the three places in most houses where temperature and humidity move the most.

Light does the damage you can't undo

Light fading is cumulative and permanent, and it doesn't require direct sun. The maximum light level recommended for museum textiles is 50 lux, which is dimmer than most people picture — a well-lit living room runs several times that on an overcast afternoon. Ultraviolet does the fastest damage, so daylight through a window is the worst offender, but ordinary room light adds up over the years too, and the reds and purples usually go first.

This is the argument for a closed cupboard or a closed box rather than open shelving, however good open shelving looks. If you keep a quilt out on a ladder or a rack because you like seeing it, rotate which one hangs there a few times a year and keep the rack out of the path of a window. A quilt that spends three months a year on display and nine in a cupboard ages at a fraction of the rate of one that lives in the light permanently.

Quilter's Note Buy unbuffered acid-free tissue, not the buffered kind. Buffered tissue carries an alkaline reserve meant to protect paper and cellulose, but it's the wrong choice against protein fibers like wool and silk, and conservation guidance for textiles specifies unbuffered tissue in direct contact with the object. Since a quilt may well contain wool batting or silk patches, unbuffered is the tissue to keep in the cupboard.

Folds are where quilts break

Fabric fails along fold lines. The fibers at a sharp crease take all the stress, they get abraded every time the piece is moved, and light and dust settle in the same line year after year. The conservation instruction is blunt about it: fold as little as you can, and pad whatever folds you can't avoid with crumpled unbuffered acid-free tissue so the crease is a soft curve instead of a knife edge.

For quilts in normal-sized homes, the practical order runs like this. Flat is best, if you have a spare bed to stack quilts on. Rolled is next, and quilts take rolling well — three stable layers held together by the quilting stitches — with the recommendation being to roll a quilt face out and the backing side in, around a tube, with tissue between the layers. Loosely folded with padded folds is the realistic option for most of us, and it's fine as long as you refold along different lines once or twice a year so no single crease carries the quilt's whole life.

The containers that cause problems

Bare wood is a poor neighbor for cotton. Cedar chests and wooden shelves give off acidic vapors as the wood ages, and those vapors discolor and weaken textiles pressed against them — the classic brown staining on the underside of a quilt that lived in grandmother's chest is exactly this. Wash the quilt or not as you like, but line the chest with unbuffered tissue or a clean cotton sheet so nothing touches raw wood.

Sealed plastic bins have the opposite problem. They trap whatever humidity was in the room the day you closed the lid, and if that air was damp you've built a small incubator for mold, which stains cotton in a way that doesn't wash out. If a plastic bin is what you have, leave the lid loose and put the quilt inside a cotton pillowcase first so it isn't lying against plastic. Vacuum bags are worse still: the compression sets creases with real force, and I've never seen a quilt come out of one looking better than it went in.

Who eats fabric, and what they eat

Pest damage splits cleanly by fiber type, and knowing which is which saves a lot of unnecessary worry. Clothes moths and carpet beetles want protein — wool, silk, hair, feathers — so a cotton quilt with cotton batting is not their target, while a wool-batted quilt or a wool patchwork very much is. Silverfish and cockroaches, on the other hand, eat cellulose, which means plain cotton, starched cotton, and anything with sizing still in it are on their menu.

That's the practical reason not to store fabric heavily starched, and the reason food stains matter more than they look. Pests are drawn to soils and residues as much as to fiber. Keep the storage area clean, check quilts and the corners of the cupboard a couple of times a year for holes, casings, or grit that looks like fine sand, and quarantine anything that comes home from an estate sale or an auction until you're sure it's clean.

The routine I run twice a year

Twice a year — I do it when the clocks change, because otherwise I'd forget — I take an hour and go through the cupboard. Every folded quilt comes out, gets shaken gently, and goes back folded on different lines with fresh tissue in the creases. Anything that's been hanging or on display for months trades places with something that's been in the dark. I run a hand over each one looking for stiff spots, damp smell, or fading on the exposed edge, and I glance at the cupboard corners for insect debris. Fabric yardage gets the same treatment in less detail: refold the bolts-worth pieces, check nothing has slumped into a hard crease, confirm the closet still smells like nothing at all. Then I write the date on a card and leave it on the shelf, because the whole system depends on knowing when I last looked.
