Strip Piecing: Fewer Seams for Nine-Patch and Rail Fence Blocks

The first nine-patch quilt I made, I sewed square to square, one seam at a time. Twenty blocks, nine squares each, twelve seams per block — I did the arithmetic afterward and came up with 240 seams, every one of them started, stopped, and clipped by hand at the machine. The second nine-patch quilt I made took an evening, and the only thing that changed was that I stopped cutting squares. I cut strips instead, sewed them into bands, and sliced the squares out already joined. That's strip piecing, and once it clicks it changes how you look at half the blocks in your pattern books.

What a strip set actually is

A strip set is a band of long fabric strips sewn together along their length and pressed flat. On its own it isn't a block or a unit — it's raw material. The work happens when you turn the band sideways and crosscut it, slicing across all the seams at once. Every slice you take off comes away as a finished row of squares, already sewn, already in the right order, with the seam allowances already pressed. A block that would have taken you six seams to assemble from loose squares now takes two, because four of those seams were sewn in a single pass down the length of a band.

The trade is simple and it's almost always worth making: you spend a little more care up front on cutting and pressing, and you get back a big reduction in handling. Loose squares are the enemy. Every one of them has to be picked up, oriented, aligned, and fed under the needle. Segments cut from a strip set arrive at the machine already correct.

Where the technique got its reputation

Strip piecing isn't a rotary-cutter-era invention, though the rotary cutter made it much faster. Seminole women in south Florida were building geometric bands out of sewn-and-resliced strips in the early twentieth century, on hand-cranked sewing machines, well before any of the modern quilting tools existed. The Florida Museum of Natural History describes the method plainly in its notes on a mid-century Seminole skirt: makers cut strips of cloth and sew them together, then cut and rearrange those strips into intricate designs. Patchwork began replacing appliqué in Seminole clothing around 1910, and the arrival of the sewing machine is exactly what let the patterns get more complex. It isn't a shortcut somebody invented to save quilters time. It's a construction logic with a century of serious work behind it.

Cutting strips that don't wander

Everything downstream depends on strips that are actually straight, and the usual failure shows up as a shallow V-bend right where the fabric was folded. Press the yardage first, fold it selvage to selvage so the two selvages line up rather than the two cut ends, and square the raw end at a true right angle to the fold before you cut a single strip. Then cut your strips crosswise, selvage to selvage, at the width your pattern calls for.

Re-square that end every three or four strips. Rulers creep, fabric shifts under the blade, and a half-degree of drift compounds quietly until strip number eight has a visible bend in it. Open one strip fully and look down its length before you commit the whole stack to a band — a bent strip sewn into a set produces a bowed band, and a bowed band produces segments that are wider at one end than the other.

Alternating your sewing direction

Here's the failure that surprises people the first time. You sew three strips together, all three seams run in the same direction, top to bottom, and the finished band curves like a banana. The feed dogs pull the bottom layer through slightly faster than the presser foot moves the top layer, and that tiny differential accumulates over forty inches of seam. Three seams in the same direction stack three helpings of it.

The fix costs nothing: sew the first seam top to bottom, flip the set end for end and sew the next one bottom to top, and keep alternating. The differentials cancel each other out and the band comes off the machine straight. Press with the seam set flat first, then open the strip and press from the right side so you don't fold a pleat in at the seam line.

Slicing the segments square

Crosscutting is where accuracy is won or lost, because your reference line is no longer a fabric edge — it's the seams inside the band. Lay the pressed set on the mat with the strips running horizontally, put a horizontal line of your ruler directly on top of one of the seam lines, and trim the end. That trim is now square to the seams rather than square to whatever the cut edge happens to be. Cut your segments at the width the pattern calls for, and every few cuts, stop and re-align a ruler line on a seam again before you continue.

Quilter's Note Line the ruler up on a seam, not on the outer edge of the band. The outer edge can be a whisker off from a slightly wide seam allowance somewhere; the seams themselves are the only lines that tell you what's actually square inside the unit.

The arithmetic that tells you how many bands to build

Strip piecing rewards a minute of planning. A strip cut selvage to selvage gives you roughly 40 inches of reliably usable length once the selvages come off. Divide that by your segment width and you know exactly what one band yields. For a six-inch finished nine-patch built from two-and-a-half-inch strips, segments are cut two and a half inches wide, so 40 divided by 2.5 gives 16 segments per band.

A nine-patch needs two segment types: a dark-light-dark row and a light-dark-light row. Each block takes two of the first and one of the second. So for twenty blocks you need 40 of type A and 20 of type B — three bands of the first arrangement and two of the second, with a few segments spare. Five bands, fourteen long seams total, and every block in the quilt is two seams from done.

Rail fence, the block that's almost pure strip set

If you want to feel the payoff immediately, make a rail fence. Sew four strips cut at an inch and a half into a band, which finishes four inches tall and measures four and a half inches raw. Crosscut that band into four-and-a-half-inch squares and you're holding finished blocks — no further piecing at all. Rotate every other one a quarter turn as you lay out the rows and the woven-basket effect appears out of nothing but alternating orientation.

Where the method stops helping

Strip piecing wants repetition and it wants yardage. A scrap quilt where no two blocks share fabric gains nothing, because you'd be building a two-segment band for every block. Directional prints fight it too: a stripe that runs correctly in the band may end up sideways once the segment is rotated into position. And it only works on units built from rectangles — the moment a block wants triangles or curves, you're back to piecing shapes individually. Blocks where it shines are the honest grids: nine-patch, four-patch, rail fence, Irish chain, checkerboard borders, and the pieced sashing that runs between them.

A strip-set session, in order

Here's the whole routine as I run it. Press the yardage and fold selvage to selvage, matching selvages rather than cut ends. Square the raw end to the fold and cut your strips, re-squaring every three or four. Open one strip and check it for a bend before you build anything. Sew the band with the seam direction alternating on every seam, set each seam flat, then press from the right side. Lay the band on the mat, put a ruler line on a seam, and trim the end square. Cut your segments, re-checking against a seam line every few cuts. Then measure one segment against the number your pattern expects before you cut the rest of the bands — if it's off by a sixteenth, you want to know that now, with four bands still uncut, rather than at the point where twenty blocks refuse to match.
